On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Union (1986-2011), the mints of these two countries have prepared a commemorative issue, consisting in both cases of one gold and one sterling silver coin minted in proof quality.

The Spanish coins, minted by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda, have face values of 20 and 10 euros, and the Portuguese coins, minted by the Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, have face values of 0.25 y 10 euros.

Minted in Proof quality, these collector coins come in stylish jewel cases. Each of the Spanish coins may be purchased in its own case. The coins are also sold in sets classed by the metal, one set containing the two gold coins (Spain and Portugal) and the other containing the two silver coins (likewise Spain and Portugal).

The obverse portrays the likeness of His Majesty King Juan Carlos.

The reverse shows the face value and reproduces an image of the punch-out metal strip remaining after obtaining the blanks or coin discs that are subsequently to be minted.

The obverse depicts the curled edges of two scrolls coming forward into the foreground where they meet, conveying the idea of the two countries.

The reverse carries the same imagery of the two scrolls, depicted here together with star-studded spheres, bringing to mind the European Union.
