Europe Program - Baroque and Rococo

Description

The Royal Mint issues the third series of collector coins from the "Ages of Europe" European minting programme, consisting of a gold coin and a silver coin. On this occasion, the collection is dedicated to the Baroque and Rococo.

In addition to Spain, Belgium, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta and Portugal participate in this European minting programme. In order to unite the programme and make it a genuine collection, one of the sides of the coins has a common design, in the case of Spain it is the side of the obverse.

The first issue in 2016 was dedicated to Contemporary Europe and the one in 2017, to the Age of Steel and Glass. Future emissions will be dedicated to the Renaissance in 2019 and the Gothic in 2020.

The collection consists of two coins minted in proof quality, one gold and one silver, with the same designs on the front and back, except that the latter has color motifs. They are presented in elegant jewellery cases and can be purchased individually, or the complete collection including the two coins.

On the obverse side is the effigy of His Majesty King Philip VI, wearing the insignia of Captain General. At the bottom is the common mark adopted by the countries that issue coins dedicated to the Europe Programme. A five-pointed star occupies the entire bottom of the coin.

Three motifs framed in ovals are reproduced on the reverse. The upper oval contains an image of the main façade of the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca; the right oval, an image of the portrait of Lope de Vega, property of the Instituto Valencia de Don Juan and deposited in the Casa Museo Lope de Vega in Madrid; the left oval, the portrait of the infanta Margarita, the central theme of Velázquez's work "Las meninas", which is conserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. In the silver piece, the image of Infanta Margarita is in colour.
