2009 - 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union (E.M.U.)
Introduction
On January 1 1999, Europe launched a new currency, the euro, although there would be a three-year delay before it would become operative on the market. The euro represented a decisive step towards the integration of Europe upon becoming the single currency of the so-called Euro Area.
On this tenth anniversary of the euro the Spanish Royal Mint and the Postal Administration made a joint release of a currency case containing a 2 Euro coin and a souvenir stamp sheet in commemoration of this important occasion.

2 Euro commemorative coin
During the first half of 2009, it was issued a new 2 euro coin to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
The design, chosen from among the five pre-selected via online voting by citizens of the European Union, is an intentionally primitive drawing by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the Central Bank of Greece.
It symbolizes the long history of trading operations ranging from prehistoric bartering to the Economic and Monetary Union, of which the Euro forms part.
This coin is included in the following sets:
