2011 - The Alhambra, the Generalife and the Albaycín

Introduction

2011 - Alhambra, Generalife y Albaicín de Granada

Located on adjacent hills, the Albayzín and the Alhambra form the medieval nucleus of Granada and overlook the modern-day city. In the eastern part of the fortress and royal residence of the Alhambra we find the wonderful gardens of the Generalife, the country house of the emirs who dominated this region of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The neighborhood of the Albayzín preserves a rich assortment of Arab buildings harmoniously merged with the traditional Andalusian architecture.

The Alhambra is an assemblage of historical monuments that was created over a span of more than six hundred years by cultures as diverse as the Islamic, the Renaissance and the Romantic. The Alhambra has been a palatine city, a royal Christian household, the captaincy of the Kingdom of Granada, and a military fortress before being declared a historical monument in 1870. The Generalife, built between the 12th and the 14th centuries, was the palace that the Muslim kings utilized as a place of repose.

In honor of this magnificent historical complex, the Spanish Royal Mint has issued, together with the Postal Service, a joint release consisting of a currency case containing a 2 euro coin and a commemorative stamp in a souvenir sheet.
