In observance of the ICAO standard, Spain's electronic passport has an RFID chip embedded in the back cover which is capable of identifying the holder without the need for contact with a machine reader.
The chip contains the biometric data relative to the holder's facial features, as well as personal data that are included in the OCR lines of printing.
In addition, it contains some of the latest security features:
- Ultraviolet printing on every page.
- The data page is covered with a transparent holographic sheet that has a series of special effects, either in relief or simulating movement, together with micro-texts and nano-texts, text and picture conversions and diffractive watermarks.
- A ghost image of the holder's photograph is printed in the center of the page.
