Introduction
Continuing with the issues of the special series dedicated to each of Spain's Autonomous Communities in turn, the Real Casa de la Moneda has put on sale two collector coins devoted respectively to the Canary Islands and to Cantabria. As a distinguishing quality, each of these models features a medal that reproduces the coat-of-arms of the particular Autonomous Community.
This issue includes the 2009 Spanish Euro coin set which comes as a limited edition in a handy numbered blister pack that protects the coins and at the same time allows perfect views of both sides.

2-Euro commemorative coin - 10th Anniversary of the European Economic and Monetary Union (E.M.U.)
The design, chosen from among the five pre-selected via online voting by citizens of the European Union, is an intentionally primitive drawing by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the Central Bank of Greece.
It symbolizes the long history of trading operations ranging from prehistoric bartering to the Economic and Monetary Union, of which the Euro forms part.
Canary Islands Silver medal
This sterling silver medal is designed as a tribute to the Canaries, an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean off the north-west coast of Africa.
The autonomous community of the Canary Islands is composed of seven islands: El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma and Tenerife, which form the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; and Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, which make up the province of Las Palmas.
The obverse shows this autonomous community's coat-of-arms which features, arranged beneath a royal crown, seven islands suggesting the archipelago, flanked by two hounds.
The reverse shows the crowned letter "M", the mint mark of the Spanish Royal Mint.
Cantabria Silver Medal
This sterling silver medal is dedicated to Cantabria, an autonomous community composed of a single province having the city of Santander as its emblematic capital.
This flourishing region is situated on the Cantabrian coast in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a land of mountainous and coastal terrain that can lay claim to an important natural and historical heritage. Indeed, the first written reference of the region dates back to the year 195 B.C. penned by the hand of the Roman historian Cato the Elder.
The obverse shows this autonomous community's coat-of-arms, the upper part of which features, beneath a royal crown, a crenelated tower alongside a sailing ship. The lower portion depicts a discoid emblem typical of the region.
The reverse shows the crowned letter "M", the mint mark of the Spanish Royal Mint.
