3rd Series Numismatic Treasures
Introduction
In 2008 under the title ¨Numismatic Treasures¨ we launched a new collector coin series which would feature reproductions of unique pieces from Spain's numismatic holdings.
This third edition in the Numismatic Treasures series is dedicated to the Visigothic Tremissis of Swinthila and Leovigild and to the Hispanic-Carthaginian Shekel.
The Visigoths were present in Spain from the mid 5th Century to the beginning of the 8th C. Of consequence were the reigns of Leovigild (568-586) and Swinthila (621-631). Leovigild made Toledo the true capital of the Kingdom. Under Swinthila Spain became an independent country with sovereignty for the first time in its history, its reach spreading throughout the entire Iberian Peninsula plus the Gallia Narbonensis. The tremissis that are reproduced in this series were minted in Toledo and in Emerita (present-day Merida) during their reigns.
The Carthaginian general, Hamilcar, together with his son-in-law, Hasdrubal, and his three sons, disembarked in Cadiz and in just a few years they had conquered the South of the Iberian Peninsula. In 229 B.C. Hasdrubal founded the city of Cartago Nova. Financing of his conquests was made possible by the minting of coins in the Peninsula. These featured images of the horse and the elephant, as beasts of burden and of war. This coin depicts on the obverse the laureate head of Melqart-Heracles. It was minted between 237 and 227 B.C.

2 Escudos - Swinthila Visigothic Tremissis
Featured in the center of the obverse and enclosed within a circle is a reproduction of the obverse of a Visigothic tremissis minted in Emerita under King Swinthila. Appearing outside the circle are the data pertinent to this collector coin.
The space on the reverse of the coin is wholly given over to a reproduction of the reverse of a King Swinthila Visigothic tremissis.
Double 4 reales - 1,5 Shekels
Featured in the center of the obverse and enclosed within a circle is a reproduction of the obverse of a Hispanic-Carthaginian coin of 1.5 shekels. Appearing outside the circle are the data pertinent to this collector coin.
The space on the reverse of the coin is wholly given over to a reproduction of the reverse of a Hispanic-Carthaginian 1.5 shekel coin.
13.92 mm diameter coin - Leovigild Visigothic tremissis
Featured in the center of the obverse and enclosed within a circle is a reproduction of the obverse of a King Leovigild Visigothic tremissis minted in Toledo. Appearing outside the circle are the data pertinent to this collector coin.
The space on the reverse of the coin is wholly given over to a reproduction of the reverse of a King Leovigild Visigothic tremissis.
