In deference to the monuments and sites registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Spain will prepare a yearly release of a commemorative 2 euro coin. To be included in this list means that the sites will be protected and that they will be preserved.

The coin in this series released in 2013 is dedicated to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

In 2013 a commemorative 2 euro coin will be released, dedicated to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

Centered on the obverse of the coin is a rendering of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a complex of monuments administered by the Patrimonio Nacional (Spain's Heritage organization).

This is now the fourth coin in the yearly series dedicated to sites in Spain included in the UNESCO World Heritage of Mankind List.
