Europa Program - Enlargement of the E.U. Proof quality coins
Introduction
In 2004 the European Union underwent the greatest expansion in its history both in scope and in diversity.
On the occasion of this unprecedented event the Mints of France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Portugal and Spain joined together in a common numismatic program, named the Europa Program. Under this program each of the Mints would release a silver coin featuring a common logo. In addition, the Spanish Royal Mint struck a gold coin to welcome the new countries into the E.U.
Details
The obverse of both coins portrays H.M. King Juan Carlos I. The reverse shows the map of Europe with the names of the new European Union member states, namely, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.
