500th Anniversary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Avila

Introduction

The year 2015 marks the quincentenary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Avila (also known as Saint Teresa of Jesus). The founder of the feminine and masculine orders of the Discalced Carmelites, a Doctor of the Catholic Church and the patroness of Spanish writers, Saint Teresa of Avila participated, along with other greats of Spanish letters, in the literary renaissance that was Spain's "Golden Age".

The quincentennial of her birth offers up a rare opportunity, not only to recall who Saint Teresa was and what she did, but also to comprehend her thinking and her life. To mark this occasion, the Spanish Royal Mint has launched a new collector coin featuring legends and motifs dedicated to the commemoration of this event.
