6th Series Numismatic Treasures

Introduction

The 6th set of collector coins in the "Numismatic Treasures" series has been released. The series consists of reproductions of outstanding pieces from Spain´s numismatic holdings. This year's set renders tribute to the Mint of Madrid, in operation since 1615.

March 2nd 2015 marked the 400th anniversary of the inauguration of the Mint of Madrid, now the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Spanish Royal Mint. Coin production was begun on April 3rd 1615 with the minting of gold coins of 2 escudos and silver coins of 4 reales.

The obverse depicts, centered within a circle, the obverse of a two-escudo gold coin of Phillip III, minted in Madrid in 1615. The details relating to this collector coin are arranged around the outside of this circle.

The reverse of the coin, covering the entire field, reproduces the reverse of the two-escudo gold coin of Phillip III, minted in Madrid in 1615.

The obverse reproduces, centered within a circle, the obverse of a four reales silver coin of Phillip III, minted in Madrid in 1615. The details relating to this collector coin are arranged around the outside of this circle.

The reverse of the coin reproduces, covering the entire field, the reverse of the four reales silver coin of Phillip III, minted in Madrid in 1615.

Coin diameter is 13.92 mm

The obverse reproduces, centered within a circle, the Madrid Mint´s early mint mark, utilized in 1615. The details relating to this collector coin are arranged around the outside of this circle.

The reverse of the coin reproduces the types for both the obverse and reverse of the maravedís that were struck in the Madrid Mint subsequent to 1618. The legend, in upper-case letters, and arranged in a semi-circle around the top of the coin, reads PHILIPPVS and III in Roman numerals, separated by a dot.
