12th Ibero-American Series

Description

As with previous issues in this series, the complete set consists of seven coins and a commemorative medal, all minted in 925 thousandth silver. On this occasion, it is dedicated to the theme of "Historic Railways" and has a maximum mintage of 7,000 units.

In 1992, fourteen Ibero-American countries agreed to mint a common coin, giving rise to the important cultural and numismatic project called the IBERO-AMERICAN SERIES.

The unique feature of this series is that each participating country allows its national coat of arms to be reproduced on the coins of the other countries, something that had not happened throughout the twenty-five centuries of numismatic history.

The obverse sides of the coins show the national coat of arms of the issuing country in the centre of the coin. Surrounding the coat of arms, in alphabetical order and clockwise, are the national coats of arms of the countries participating in this issue: Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Portugal.

This twelfth series is issued under the theme HISTORICAL TRAINS. The reverse side of each coin shows a classic train of that country: locomotive number 8 (Ecuador), locomotive Mataró (Spain), steam locomotive number 34 (Guatemala), locomotive number 25 (Nicaragua), Carlos Antonio López railway (Paraguay), English railway that ran between Lima and Callao (Peru) and the Duero line train (Portugal).

As in all the sets in this series, these pieces are accompanied by a commemorative medal whose obverse represents an allegory of the train as a link between all the Latin American countries and which shows the coats of arms of all the participating countries on the reverse.

All the pieces in the collection, including the medal, have a metric value of 4 reales, old coins minted on both Spain and American mints, and therefore weigh 13.5 grams and have a diameter of 33 mm. Below you can find the facial values of these coins. Click on the name of the country to see a larger image of each piece.
