800th Anniversary of the Burgos Cathedral

Details

Next 20th July will mark the 800th anniversary of the laying of the first stone in Burgos Cathedral. To celebrate this important event, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda is joining in the various tributes by issuing a coin commemorating this important event, both culturally and socially.

The construction of this emblematic Spanish Gothic building took place during the 13th century, at least with regard to its main Gothic structure, consisting of three naves with ambulatory and transept nave, apse chapels, doorways and cloister. In later centuries, new architectural works were added, such as the spires on the main façade and the dome over the transept, giving the church its unmistakable cathedral profile.

Thanks to all this, this marvellous jewel of classical Gothic art was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

The coin, minted in silver, with a mintage of eight reales and a maximum mintage of 6,000, features the portrait of His Majesty King Felipe VI on the obverse. The reverse shows the image of the Cathedral, together with a colour reproduction of the central stained glass window of the rose window of the Portada del Sarmental.
