The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has invited the Royal Spanish Mint to participate in the official collector coin programme for the World Cup scheduled to be held in Qatar at the end of next year (21 November to 18 December 2022). Qatar is the smallest country to host a FIFA World Cup and the first nation in the Middle East to host such a sporting event.

On the occasion of this event, the FNMT-RCM is issuing two coins, minted in gold and silver respectively, with the effigy of H.M. the King Felipe VI on their common obverse. The reverse of each coin is different, showing a player preparing to kick the ball in the case of the gold coin, and a scene of a football match between two players in the case of the silver coin, with the globe in the background on both.

Both coins will be distributed worldwide and sold individually.
