275th anniversary of Francisco de Goya

Description

For the year 2021, it is agreed to issue, mint and put into circulation a set of collector coins to commemorate the 275th anniversary of the birth of Francisco de Goya.

The complete collection consists of five coins: 3 silver square coins, a 50 Euro silver and a gold 8 escudos coin.

Each of the pieces, minted in proof quality, depicts on the obverse a small sample of the most emblematic works by the painter held at the Museo Nacional del Prado.

All of them are presented in elegant jewellery boxes and can be purchased individually, or as a silver collection (comprising the four pieces minted in silver: three square coins and the 50 Euro one) or the complete collection, which includes all five coins.

The characteristics of each of the pieces are detailed as follows:

8 gold escudos

This coin shows on the obverse the work «The sleep of reason produces monsters», executed by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes between 1796 and 1797. The motifs and legends are surrounded by an allegorical border alluding to the Goyaesque strawberry girl (her hair loosely held in a snood decorated with strawberries).

On the reverse, the work «Self-portrait of Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painter», executed by the artist between 1797 and 1799.

0 Euro silver coin

This piece depicts on the obverse a colour detail from the work «Autumn or The Grape Harvest», executed by Francisco de Goya in 1786.

Its reverse Su anverso is the same as that of the 8 escudos coin, and thus shows the work «Self-portrait of Francisco Goya y Lucientes, painter».

Square silver coins

Each of these three pieces has on its obverse side a colour representation of some of the paintings by Francisco de Goya that are held at the Museo Nacional del Prado.

The first piece reproduces on its obverse side the work entitled «The parasol», executed in 1777.

The second coin shows the work «The Drowning Dog» executed by this artist between 1820 and 1823.

The last of these three pieces depicts the work «The Kite», executed between 1777 and 1778.

The reverse, common to all of them, reproduces the sculpture of Goya created by Mariano Benlliure in 1902, which is located in front of the Goya door of the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid.
