The main purposes of minting and issuing €2 coins are cultural/artistic dissemination and the commemoration of major events.

2012 - Burgos Cathedral

In 2012, the sixth issue of a €2 commemorative coin is put into circulation, dedicated on this occasion to Burgos Cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic art. It was awarded the designation of World Heritage Site in 1984.

The obverse bears an image of Burgos Cathedral. After the 2011 issue this will be the third coin in the annual series dedicated to places in Spain which have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Places in Spain included on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

2011 - Alhambra, Generalife y Albaicín de Granada

In the first half of 2011, the fifth issue of a €2 commemorative coin will be put into circulation, dedicated on this occasion to Granada's Alhambra, Generalife and Albaicín.

The obverse will bear an image of the matchless Patio de los Leones, part of the Alhambra. After the 2010 issue, this will be the second coin in the annual series dedicated to places in Spain which have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Places in Spain included on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

2010 - Centro histórico de Córdoba

In the fourth issue of the €2 coin, the reverse shows an image of the interior of Córdoba´s Mosque-Cathedral, one of the oldest and best examples of Islamic art in Europe.

This is the first coin in the annual series dedicated to places in Spain which have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

2009 - 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union

2009 - X Aniversario Unión Económica y Monetaria

In the first half of 2009, a new €2 coin was issued on the occasion of the Tenth Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

Chosen from among five shortlisted entries in an online vote open to European Union citizens, the design is a deliberately primitive drawing by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the Central Bank of Greece.

2007- 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome

2007- 50 Aniversario del Tratado de Roma

The second issue of the €2 coin commemorates the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which was signed on March 25th 1957 and marked the starting point of European Union. The national side bears a design which is common to all eurozone member states.

2005- Don Quixote

2005- Don Quijote de la Mancha

The first €2 commemorative coin was issued in 2005 to mark the 400th year since the publication of Don Quixote. An image of the eponymous character appears on the coin's obverse.
